Your Handy Hip-Hop Family Tree + New Quannum Site

Whoa…got this link from Cindy Campbell, courtesy the Tampa Bay Times. Click on “Rap’s family tree”. It reminds me of those old rock band charts folks used to do. Endless fun…

Speaking of which, run over to the new Quannum site. More fun in the new world…

Endless fun but glaringly inaccurate. A couple examples: no link between Public Enemy and Busta Rhymes (who was first mentored by the Bomb Squad as part of LONS)? A direct link from the Sugarhill Gang to PE rather than, at least, from Grand Master Flash, whose group the Furious 5 did the first widely acknowledged social commentary hip hop song “The Message”? I could go on….

true! to me that’s the fun of it…there’s endless arguments to be started and endless maps to be drawn. case in point, the link from sugarhill to pe is made by chuck himself–his first encounter of which was on the mic, it’s the story that i threw on the mixtape…

but hey, go on! and at some point we should start doing our own…there’s a great l.a. map to draw, not to mention bay area, new orleans, miami, atlanta, new jersey…brooklyn would fill an encyclopedia…
